# Tiered gift with purchase on Shopify

> A tiered gift with purchase rewards a bigger order step by step. Here is how to choose the steps, show the progress, and keep every reward true at checkout.

## What a tiered gift with purchase is

A tiered gift with purchase, or spend more, get more, gives a reward at each step of a growing order: free shipping at the first threshold, a gift at the next, a bigger gift or money off after that. Each step is visible, so the shopper knows what one more item earns.

It is not a loyalty programme. There are no points or accounts: the reward belongs to the order in the cart, and it leaves if the order shrinks below its step.

In Luxe this is the [rewards ladder](https://www.luxesets.com/product/rewards-ladder): up to 10 rungs, each a threshold and a reward, applied at Shopify checkout by one automatic discount, **Luxe Rewards**.

## Choose the thresholds

Start from what your orders look like today. In Shopify Analytics, find your average order value and the price of your most common item.

- **The first rung** should be reachable with one more item from a typical order. Too far, and shoppers ignore it; too close, and it rewards orders you already had.
- **Each next rung** should be one or two items further, not a leap.
- **Count what fits the store.** A ladder can count the cart subtotal, the number of items, or the number of bundle sets. Item counts read simply ("2 items: free shipping") for stores whose prices are close together; subtotals suit a wide price range.
- **Keep it short.** Three rungs are easy to read in a cart. Luxe Starter allows three; Growth and Pro allow up to 10.

Subtotal rungs in Luxe count after set prices and before other apps' discounts, and a gift never counts towards its own rung.

## Free shipping first, then a gift

Free shipping is the reward shoppers understand at a glance, so it makes a good first rung. A gift works best one step later, when the order has grown enough to carry its cost. A typical ladder:

| Rung | Reward |
| ------ | -------------------------------------------- |
| First | Free shipping |
| Second | A free gift the shopper chooses |
| Third | A bigger gift, or a percentage off the order |

Luxe's templates start you there: **Tiered rewards ladder**, **Free shipping threshold**, **Tiered gifts**, **Choose your gift** and the **Black Friday gift ladder** among 15.

## Let the shopper choose the gift

A gift the shopper picks is a gift they want. Each gift rung in Luxe offers up to 10 options. When the order reaches the rung, the Luxe cart drawer, or the gift picker beside the rewards bar, offers them; nothing joins the cart until the shopper chooses. Checkout takes 100% off the chosen gift while its rung is met. [A gift the shopper chooses](https://www.luxesets.com/guides/a-gift-the-shopper-chooses) covers the details.

Publish every gift to your Online Store, and keep gift cards and subscription-only products off the list: they cannot be gifts.

## Show the progress

A threshold nobody sees does nothing. Put the progress where the shopper decides to add more:

- **In the cart drawer.** The Luxe cart drawer shows the ladder above the cart lines with the next step, such as "$26 more for free shipping", and can offer the item that closes the gap.
- **On your theme's cart page.** Place the **Rewards bar** block in the theme editor.
- **In a set's tray.** A Collection set can carry its own tiers in its tray, counted in items.

Every label is yours, in Settings > Storefront > Storefront words and on each rung.

## Stacking with discount codes

Decide before launch whether a code should stack with the ladder's rewards. In Luxe every ladder runs through one automatic discount, so the rule is one store-wide setting: **Settings > Checkout and pricing > Discount combinations** (product, order and shipping discounts). Shopify then applies codes as that setting allows. Test your most used code against each rung before the campaign starts.

## Set it up in Luxe

1. Turn on the Luxe app embed in the theme editor. Gifts need it, since the shopper chooses them on the storefront; money and shipping rewards apply at checkout even with it off.
2. Open **Rewards** > **Create ladder** and start from a template.
3. Choose what the ladder counts, then add the rungs: a threshold, a reward and the label shoppers see.
4. For a season, set a start and an end date, so the ladder begins and ends on its own.
5. Check the preview beside the editor, which shows the drawer and the bar for a sample cart, then activate.

[Set up a rewards ladder with a free gift](https://www.luxesets.com/help/how-tos/rewards-ladder-with-a-free-gift) walks through each screen.

## When the cart changes

If the shopper removes items and drops below a gift rung, Luxe removes the gift and shows how much more unlocks it again. Checkout makes a gift free only while its rung is met, so a gift is never given away below its step, even if a script fails on the storefront.
