# How to build a box on Shopify

> A build-a-box bundle lets the shopper fill a box slot by slot and pay one price. Plan three decisions, set it up in an afternoon, and test it at checkout.

## What a build-a-box is

A build-a-box (also called build your own bundle, or BYOB) is a set the shopper assembles: a box with a number of slots, each filled from products you choose, sold at one price. A coffee sampler of six origins, a candle discovery box and a skincare routine with a slot per step are all build-a-box bundles.

Shopify's own Bundles app sells fixed bundles and multipacks, where you choose the items. For a box the shopper fills, you need a bundle builder app. In Luxe it is the [Build-your-own set](https://www.luxesets.com/product/build-your-own-set).

## Plan the box

Three decisions shape every box. Make them on paper first.

### The slots

Name each group of slots the way a shopper would read it: "Choose 3 origins", "Serums, choose 2". For each group decide:

- how many slots it has, and whether the shopper may stop early (a minimum below the maximum);
- whether the same item may fill two slots;
- where its items come from: a collection, a list of variants or a tag.

Add items that always come in the box, such as a dripper, a cleanser or the box itself, as fixed components. Each can be charged at its own price, free or at a fixed amount.

### The layout

The builder has five layouts. **Tiles** (an image grid) is the default; **Box** shows an illustrated box that fills as slots are picked and suits gift boxes and samplers; **Pills** suits small sets; **Variant rows** gives one row of swatches per product, for shades and colours; **Quantity list** shows a row per item with a stepper, for packs that grow. On a phone the item picker opens as a sheet.

## Set it up in Luxe

1. In Luxe, open **Settings** and turn on the app embed in the theme editor, then save. Luxe adds app blocks and one app embed; it never edits your theme's code.
2. Open **Bundle sets** > **Create bundle set** and start from a template: **Build a box (pick N)**, **Buy X get Y free**, **Gift box: choose three** or one made for your category.
3. Under **Set product**, pick an existing product or create one. It is the product shoppers add to cart, and a normal product, so it stays purchasable everywhere.
4. Fill in the slot groups, the fixed components and the price from your plan, and choose the layout in the **Display** card.
5. Check **Preview**. It shows what checkout will charge, the value, and the price for shoppers who buy without choosing; one button aligns them if they differ.
6. Set the status to **Active**. In **Go live**, select **Add to theme**: the theme editor opens on the set's product page with the **Bundle set builder** block added. Save.

## Examples by category

- **Coffee and tea.** A tasting flight: pick six origins, buy three and get three free, with Roast and Origin as filters in the picker.
- **Candles and home.** A discovery box of six votives in the Box layout, with a wick trimmer included.
- **Skincare and beauty.** A routine with a slot per step, or a lip trio in Variant rows, a shade per slot.
- **Pet food and treats.** A treat box: choose five.
- **Food boxes.** A bakery box of six, with at most two of any one item and allergens shown on every pick.

## Test it at checkout

1. Open the set's product page, fill every slot and add the set to the cart.
2. Compare the price in the builder, the cart and checkout. With Luxe they come from one pricing engine, and checkout applies the price through Shopify Functions.
3. Change a pick with **Edit set** in the Luxe cart drawer and check the price is worked out again.
4. Try a discount code you already run. Codes apply on top of the set's price; to keep one off, exclude the set product from it in **Discounts**.

Test orders appear under **Billing** and are never billed.

A box often lifts the order enough to earn something more.
